WMKV/WLHS Remember On-Air Host, Tom Emmert

It is with profound sadness that I inform you of the loss of one of our true Renaissance Men with the passing of Tom Emmert on Tuesday, July 4. Tom Emmert came to WMKV as a volunteer and helped produce many shows behind the scenes including the Mary Ellen Tanner Show and the Story of Jazz.  Tom was a host/producer for his own music program, Music in the Emmert Manner, and was a key component, host, and engineer/editor of Computer Talk and WMKV Goes to the Pops programs. Tom started getting his feet wet in radio as a student at Purdue, and WMKV was thrilled to benefit later in Tom’s life.

Despite sometimes struggling to get to the station as he battled illness, Tom experienced the fountain of youth at WMKV. When he was in our studios, he seemed to become twenty years younger. His joy and passion for music and technology were always evident on the air, and his love of helping others was always at the core of his being.

Not long ago, the staff of the station was working on a short a cappella parody song we’d sing to salute another department on campus. Tom even offered to create musical charts for different vocal parts to help us--all that for a song that would be sung just once!

Tom was multi-faceted, having worked as an engineer for General Electric, while also singing with the world champion Southern Gateway Chorus and the vocal group Nuance. He was an admirer of so many styles of music from classical to pop, and his joy of sharing music and technical help on Computer Talk raised all of us up. His family has asked that any memorial gifts be made to WMKV Radio.

We extend our prayers to Tom’s family and his many friends. We remember and celebrate Tom’s life and vibrancy because that is what Tom wanted us to do. We will miss you, Tom Emmert, and you will always be part of the storied history of WMKV and WLHS!

If desired, memorials may be made to WMKV 89.3 FM
